Manufacturing today

Now, on the 40th anniversary of the founding of the company, we are commissioning our new ultramodern manufacturing plant. Our birthday present to ourselves will benefit all our customers. Only the best is good enough for our clients. The new rooms and plant exceed even the specifications required for the manufacture of pharmaceutical products. Manufacturing is done in slightly pressurized "Clean Rooms" to which access is possible only via personnel locks in which special working clothes must be put on. The water used is prepared in a special plant and is microbe-free. In combination with modern technology this makes it possible to manufacture germ-free products. This in turn means that some products can be manufactured without preserving agents whilst with other products these ingredients can be reduced to an absolute minimum. As a result the tolerability of these products is improved even further. These new installations allow practically seamless in-process controls. The analytical laboratory investigates the raw materials for content and purity before use. Only if the raw materials conform with the strict specifications are they used. Of course, the end products also undergo thorough chemical, analytical and microbiological checks.

Here also all the specifications must be met so that it is guaranteed that only high-quality and perfect products are released to the customers. All the manufacturing and control steps are recorded either manually or by direct electronic data capture, so that the progress and analytic results of any batch can be called up and checked at any time.

The high purity of the top quality raw materials and the described processing procedure make it possible, for example, for the products to have a pleasant odour without needing odour-correction or perfume.

As a result of this new technology, our raw materials and our processes, we can guarantee consistently high quality of our end products.

Manufacturing yesterday

The manufacturing process is of prime importance for the quality of a product. For example, the fineness (particle size and particle size distribution) of an emulsion is critically dependent on the details of the manufacturing process. This also applies to the purity of a product. Louis Widmer manufactures all its products according to the Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines for pharmaceutical products. The requirements for this are much higher than for the manufacture of cosmetics. It can be seen that this has always been our strategy by the fact that the first product "Bioplacentine" was announced and licensed in 1960 by the IKS (Interkantonale Kontrollstelle für Heilmittel/Intercantonal Office for the Control of Medicaments). We spared no effort to manufacture fine emulsions with good penetration. This was achieved by using not just stirrers and homogenizers but also roller units. This did make manufacture more complicated and more time-consuming, but the reward was products that were uniquely consistent and stable.

Our central manufacture in Switzerland is yet another quality assurance measure.
